In an era where violence rules our screens from video games to television, it’s a nice change when an educational game comes along that’s fun challenging and doesn’t consist of blowing away zombies and splattering body parts across a screen.
And Tantrix, invented by New Zealand Backgammon champ, will keep even the most hyperactive 12-year-old enthralled for hours.
Ask Alex Kowalczyk.
“Alex began playing Tantrix in January this year and is now ranked 14th internationally, playing it on the Web, and has been asked by the inventor to handle the online gossip page.
Tantrix is said to enhance memory, strategic and problem solving skills. Alex said he loves playing Tantrix online and getting to meet so many different people from so many different places.
“You can meet some really interesting people. It feels quite enthralling to know older people and play Tantrix with them. It also helps me to understand the different cultures of various countries,” Alex said.
Alex said it’s even better than TV.
“On Saturday I usually watch my favourite TV show but if there’s someone on the Net wanting to play Tantrix with me I don’t care about the show – I’d rather go play Tantrix, “he said.
Tantrix, which really has to be seen to be understood, will be demonstrated by Alex and his mother, Anna, at the next two Summerland Delight markets on December 3 and 17. You can also get online at Tantrix.com – and maybe challenge Alex if you dare.
